The End But Just The Beginning...
After a fabulous 18 months with the guys & girls of the Lovetheraces website my journey is coming to an end. Nothing last forever as the old saying goes, and perhaps this is just the beginning of something else for...

Overcoming Hurdles
Recently I attended a seminar which I was invited along to as a guest of my colleague Dawn. Every so often, because of her accreditation through accountancy, she gets the opportunity to attend some rather interesting events. It was held at...

Train One, Save Many...Redcar RNLI's New Boat
Recently I’ve taken a short break from racing. Now that I am back in the land of ‘blog’, I thought I’d share something with you which is non-racing but nonetheless it’s still very close to my heart. I support a...

Small Course, Big Day Out
On the 4th August I visited Thirsk racecourse for the very first time. Considering I live less than an hour away this is a pretty dismal fact which I am not proud of! Call myself a racing nut?! This time...

Newcomer From The Hannah Hooton Stable - Keeping The Peace
Growing up one of my favourite books (& films) was National Velvet. I was never one for picking up a book unless it was racing related or indeed if I had to for school! My daily read was always the...

She Came, She Raced, She Conquered!
The racing world waited with bated breath as the Australian wonder horse began her pre-race warm up at Royal Ascot. They were stood ten deep just to get a glimpse of this equine freak of nature as she casually strode...

The Wonder From Down Under!
Black Caviar is her name and winning is her game. Not since Phar Lap has a horse captured the heart of a nation like she has in Australia. BC is a 5yo mare by the Australian stallion Bel Esprit who...

Fully Fledged Owner & The WRS Shoes Make Their Debut!
Today (18thApril) was going to be my first day at the races as a fully-fledged owner of Somethingboutmary. I had carefully planned my outfit right down to the shoes, designed by my very own hand! I was proud to...

The Flat is Back!!!
The flat is well and truly back! I have always loved the first turf meeting of the year at Doncaster. This for me holds some unusual and special memories as back in 2006 (when the Lincoln meeting was held at...

There's Somethingboutmary!!!
We arrived at Kevin Ryan’s yard at 10.30 on 17thMarch. I was really excited to be meeting some of the others involved with the unraced 2yo filly called Somethingboutmary. As usual it was a dull and dreary morning –...

Little Track, Big Run In!
While looking through the calendar for forth coming race meetings, I came across a Sunday meeting for Sedgefield on 4thMarch. Sedgefield is quite local to me, and I thought it would be good to pay it a visit since...

Jumping Up North, There's Nothing Better!
On the 28thJanuary I was lucky enough to revisit Doncaster. Thankfully there was no pressure on me this time round – the last visit was for the semis of the Filly Factor. I was really looking forward to this...

Hayley Moore Q & A!
One of the nicest people you will meet in racing is Hayley Moore. As you all know Hayley was the winner of the Filly Factor, and it was good to know I was run out of it in my semi-final...

Star Turn Overturn!
Newcastle was to be the first course where I would shoot some video for the website. I had dabbled in singing with my racing parody songs, and I use the term ‘singing’ very loosely, but now it was time to be...
About Karen Thacker
Welcome to my page! I’m Karen and I can’t tell you how excited I am to be one of the ‘voices’. I live in Redcar in the North East of England, just a stone’s throw from the racecourse itself. In fact, I can sit out the back and hear the commentary on race days!
You could say I’m a little obsessed by racing and everything to do with it. Let me explain....If racing was a drink, I’d drink it, and if it were a food I’d be obese! Just a glimpse of those plastic white rails makes my heart beat that little bit faster.
From as far back as I can remember I’ve loved horses and racing in particular. I think it stems from watching the racing on TV with my dad from a very early age, which then took hold of me – next thing I’m riding a finish on my beanbag against Lester Piggott!
It’s not just about picking winners (although that’s always a bonus), it’s everything the day and the courses have to offer. Follow me as I go racing and invite you to share in my favourite pastime. Any questions? Just ask!
Racing is a fabulous sport where you can experience every emotion on the planet, and once in a while a truly exceptional equine will come along who will not only take your breath away, but will also bring a tear to your eye.
In six words I’m a mum who loves racing. I ‘Love The Races’. I hope you will too!
