Who's going to win Gold at Ayr?

This Saturday see’s Ayr host its biggest day of the flat season, with its feature race being the Ayr Gold Cup. Twenty seven runners will line up for this typically dramatic sprint race, all hoping to take home the £74,000 prize fund in similar style to Our Jonathon, who left the field for dead during his two length success last year. Our Jonathon will be returning to the scene of his big win once again this year, however his twenty six rivals may not be so keen to see him repeat his success. Lovetheraces have put together a useful pick of statistics to help you find the winner of this tricky contest.

10/10 winners have started the race at a double figure price, so if you do manage to find the winner you are sure to get a decent pay out for your efforts!

7/10 winners carried 9 stone 2 pounds or less. Weight is a seemingly crucial factor of the race, and the stats show that the lighter weighted horses often find it easier to get their nose in front.

7/10 winners came from stall 10 or higher. Although this stat may look very telling, winners have also come from low draws, it is crucial to watch the preceding Silver Cup to see what the bias will be on Saturday.

0/10 winners started the race as favourite. Although clearly holding a good chance, the favourite has always found one or two rivals too much on the day.

0/10 winners were aged older than 6. It pays to follow the younger more progressive horses in this contest, however only one 3 year old has one in the last ten years so the age groups to focus on are the 4, 5 and 6 year olds as they have won 9 of the last 10.

So after careful consideration using the stats above, we may have found you the winner! We believe that the one to follow is Alben Star who is trained by Richard Fahey. Carrying a mere 8 stone 10 pounds, the gelding has some useful form already  this year and with a nice draw and all stats in his favour he should go well at a big price. With a course and distance victory already to his name, he is not one to underestimate and shall hopefully provide Fahey’s Malton based yard with another big sprint race winner after Mayson took the July cup earlier in the season.
