Red-Hot Summer Continues For Buick And Gosden

With the country’s principal sporting focus switching to the opening of the Olympics, racing fans were still treated to some fantastic racing over the weekend both in this country and over the channel.

At Deauville on Sunday it was business as usual for the red-hot racing duo of John Gosden and William Buick as they teamed to win with Elusive Kate in the Prix Rothchild, a contest for fillies and mares over a mile. Buick’s mount made all the running early-on and quickened up in the final stages to hold off a challenge from Golden Lilac, the odds-on favourite for the race.

Elsewhere over the weekend the feature race at York, the Sky Bet York Stakes, produced a very exciting conclusion as Sri Putra (trained by Roger Varian) edged out Kieren Fallon’s mount Afsare to win the valuable Group 2 contest. Sri Putra looked the ‘pick of the paddock’ prior to the race and confirmed this by producing a late run in the hands of Neil Callan to win by a neck. At Ascot on Saturday, the Group 3 Princess Margaret Juddmonte Stakes was won by odds-on favourite Maureen, continuing Richard Hughes’ rich vein of form. He has now had 19 winners in the last 14 days and sits second in the Jockey’s Championship on 78 winners, ten behind current leader Ryan Moore.

All eyes now turn to Glorious Goodwood, and in particular Wednesday, as Frankel aims to make it 12 wins from 12 starts in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes.
