New Rooney Nag Scores at Second Time of Asking
Wayne Rooney, who recently became a racehorse owner with wife Coleen, tasted his first success on the track thanks to Yourartisonfire, who stormed to victory at Haydock on Thursday (July 5th).
The £26,000 chestnut colt, which is owned by Rooney in partnership with racing enthusiasts John O’Shea and Chris Patten, saw off three opponents under a good ride by Michael Metcalfe to win the ‘Distinction Doors Maiden Stakes’ and could now be heading to Glorious Goodwood next month.
Yourartisonfire is one of several horses owned by the Manchester United player who was persuaded to try racehorse ownership by team mate Michael Owen. However, this one is trained by Mrs Karl Burke at Middleham, North Yorkshire, unlike his other horses which are stabled at Michael Owen’s Cheshire training establishment.
The horse’s Haydock win follows a promising first outing at Nottingham races in June when the colt finished fourth of fourteen when his lack of experience would have been against him.
Yourartisonfire, who is by top sprint stallion Dutch Art, showed that he’s not lacking in speed when out-staying his rivals to score easily, collecting £3,200 in first prize money.
Rooney’s other horses include Pippy, Switcharooney and Tomway, all in training with Tom Dascombe at the Cheshire Stables owned by Michael Owen.
