Kauto is Favourite Star of 21st Century

Published 12/02/2012

Kauto Star, whose participation in this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup is due to be decided on today (Monday), has been voted the most popular racehorse of the 21st Century.

He topped Racing for Change’s online poll by a wide margin ahead of Flat racing superstars like Frankel and Sea The Stars.

Kauto, the only horse ever to regain the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the five times winner of Boxing Day’s King George VI Chase, took almost a quarter of the votes.

After a fall at his home stables in Somerset a fortnight ago, a decision is to be made about whether or not he will take part in next Friday’s Gold Cup.  He is the 4-1 second favourite for the race behind current champion Long Run.

Uniquely among racehorses, 12-year-old Kauto has an army of followers who come to watch his races bedecked in scarves in his green and yellow colours.

The top horses in the Racing for Change poll – for which participants were asked for their favourite racehorse unprompted - were:

  • Kauto Star – 23%
  • Sea The Stars - 11%
  • Frankel - 9%
  • Denman - 7%
  • Best Mate - 4%
  • Big Buck\'s - 2%

Rod Street, Chief Executive of Racing Enterprises Limited, said: “The vote is a reflection of the overwhelming affection and esteem in which Kauto Star is held by followers of our sport.

“Even although his achievements are legend, it is still remarkable that he is so far ahead of other fantastic racehorses like the unbeaten Frankel who lit up Flat racing in 2011.

“Everyone is hoping for good news on Monday and that Kauto will line up on Friday in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.”
