Gigantic Gamble For Newmarket's Charity Cavalry Charge

A 65-year-old pub Landlord from Newmarket is the cause of one of the biggest betting plunges ever seen in bookmaker Blue Square's history.  Ken Clutterbuck who is one of the 11 riders lining up for the Blue Square Bet Charity Cavalry Charge race on Saturday (18 August) at Newmarket’s July Course has been the recipient of heavy support in the ante-post market of the charity race that is helping to raise money for Racing Welfare and The Household Cavalry Operational Casualties Fund.

His price has plunged from 33/1 to a short-priced second favourite in a matter of days since Blue Square Bet quietly opened the market last week. There is clearly confidence from somewhere in the ability of Ken and his as yet to be confirmed mount, the popular Exning-based Landlord and trainer has remained tight lipped, however, on who exactly has wagered such large sums to cause this massive market swing.

Current favourite in the market is Racing UK presenter and ex-jockey Niall Hannity. After being turned over at short odds in the charity race at the Cheltenham Festival last year, he is said to be determined to reverse the trend in this event.

Of the other ten riders, actor Nathaniel Parker is currently a generous 50/1 for the race and has been jocked up by Paul Webber. The Inspector Lyndley and Merlin star will doubtless prove to be a popular selection with the female racegoers on the day.

A rush of Newmarket money is, however, anticipated for West Suffolk MP Matthew Hancock who has already raised over £8,000 for the race. Following a successful pre-race session  at Michael Bell’s and news filtering out that HQ’s own MP  is riding a John Gosden horse, the Blue Square layers suggest that it may be difficult seeing the 33-year-old getting beaten, particularly with the sparkling form shown by Gosden’s horses this summer.

The names of the riders' horses is expected to be announced this Friday.
