Buick Star of the Knavesmire and CNN Film!
The York Ebor Festival on the Knavesmire last week provided numerous highlights, with the best racehorse in the world, Frankel, setting the racecourse alight with a stunning display in the Juddmonte International on the opening day.
The jockey who once again stole the headlines, though, was the Group 1 man of the moment, William Buick. The twenty-four year old not only landed the Great Voltigeur on Wednesday for his boss, John Gosden, aboard Thought Worthy, but he also partnered Ortensia and Times Up to victory in both the QIPCO British Champions Series contests on the final two days of the fixture.
Buick claimed that he’d “never finished a race as fast” when coming from nearly last to first to take the Coolmore Nunthorpe on Friday afternoon aboard the Australian speedball, Ortensia. However, he wouldn’t have been uttering similar comments after his winning ride on Times Up on Saturday, as this came in the long-distance Lonsdale Cup.
These victories now see Buick lying in third in the Flat Jockeys’ Championship and with Ryan Moore currently out injured with a broken wrist, Buick is apparently not ruling out a crack at the title with plenty more decent rides lined up for the remainder of the season.
If he is to pursue the championship, all his skills, fitness and drive will be tested to the limits and therefore it seems apt that CNN recently decided to feature Buick in a mini documentary they shot entitled ‘Jockeys – The ultimate athletes’.
The three-minute feature follows Buick for a typical day and demonstrates the daily travails of a top-flight jockey and the hardships they often have to endure in the quest for success and Group-race glory. To view the short film, CLICK HERE.
