Buick and Gosden Continue Their Summer Dominance

William Buick and John Gosden reinforced their position as the jockey and trainer combination to follow this summer with another big race success on Saturday. Following five winners at Royal Ascot, which netted Gosden the Top Trainer Award at the meeting, they teamed up to win the Coral Eclipse on Saturday with Nathaniel.

Nathaniel had been off the track for nine months following various niggles but a great training performance from Gosden saw the four-year-old battle on up the Sandown hill under a power-packed ride from William Buick to beat the favourite, Farhh and Frankie Dettori.

Interestingly no horse has ever finished as close to the mighty Frankel as Nathaniel did when they both met on their racecourse debuts at Newmarket in August 2010, and Gosden raised the intriguing possibility after the Eclipse that the two top-notchers could face each other again. "It would be fun to take on Frankel once more, as there was only half a length between them in a maiden a long time ago. The Juddmonte (International) would be an option, as would the Champion Stakes at the end of the year."

Buick also landed a big handicap on Saturday afternoon for his boss and, as a result, was shortened by most bookmakers to take the Champion Jockey crown. Only Ryan Moore and Richard Hughes now sit ahead of the twenty-three year old in the betting market for the jockey to have ridden the most winners by the end of the Flat season.

The pair will be hoping to continue their recent run when they head to the July Meeting at Newmarket this weekend, when one of their Royal Ascot winners, Fallen For You, could run in the Falmouth Stakes on Friday. That race and the July Cup on Saturday are both QIPCO British Champions Series racedays and you could be watching both in style courtesy of a great hospitality package we’re offering Lovetheraces readers HERE
